UCLA Bruins defensive back Jay Shaw expressed frustration with the team’s missed opportunities in Saturday’s 27-10 loss to the Arizona Wildcats.
“We had a lot of chances to win that game,” Shaw said. “We didn’t make plays when we needed to.”
Shaw’s comments were also supported by his teammates and coaches. The Bruins had many opportunities to turn the game in their favor, but they could not take advantage.
One of the biggest missed opportunities came in the first half. UCLA was trailing 14–7 when they had a chance to tie the game on a fourth-and-goal play at the Arizona 1-yard line. However, the Bruins were unable to score and the Wildcats took a 21–7 lead at halftime.
UCLA had several chances to score a touchdown in the second half, but were unable to finish the drive. The Bruins kicked field goals instead of touchdowns on several occasions.
“We’re not finishing drives,” UCLA head coach Chip Kelly said. “It’s been a problem for us all season.”
The Bruins’ defense also played a role in the loss. UCLA gave up several big plays to the Arizona offense, including a 75-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
“We need to get better at stopping the big play,” Shaw said. “We can’t give up those types of plays.”
Despite the defeat, Shaw and his teammates are confident they can turn things around. The Bruins still have a tough schedule, but believe they have the talent to win their remaining games and make a bowl game.
“We’re just one game away from winning that many games,” Shaw said. “We have to start making those plays.”
Analysis
UCLA’s loss to Arizona was disappointing, especially considering the team’s high expectations at the start of the season. The Bruins have struggled to finish drives and stop big plays all season long.
If the Bruins want to turn things around, they need to improve in these two areas. He also needs to start more plays on special teams. The Bruins have been performing poorly on special teams all season long, and it has caused them to lose several games.
The Bruins have a tough schedule remaining, but they are still capable of making a bowl game. However, to do this they need to start playing their best football.
